We’ll be honest – we didn’t know what to expect from Dollywood. A theme park in the Smoky Mountains built around Dolly Parton? It sounded quirky. Maybe a little kitschy. But within an hour of walking through those gates, we were completely won over.
Dollywood has something that’s hard to find at bigger parks: genuine charm. The staff are warm, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the rides? Way better than we expected. If you’re planning a trip to Tennessee, this park deserves a spot on your list.
Here’s everything we learned from our visit – the rides we loved, the food we devoured, and the tips we wish we’d known.
The Rides: Better Than We Expected
We came for the coasters, and Dollywood delivered. This park punches well above its weight when it comes to thrill rides.
Lightning Rod – Our Absolute Favorite
This is the one. Lightning Rod is a wooden launch coaster (yes, that’s a thing) that shoots you from 0 to 45 mph straight up a hill, then hits 73 mph on the way down. It’s the fastest wooden coaster in the world, and honestly? It felt like it, well for Iain anyway. The airtime on this ride is insane – he was out of his seat more than in. If you only ride one coaster at Dollywood, make it this one.
Pro tip: This ride breaks down sometimes due to its complexity. Ride it early before any issues pop up.
Wild Eagle – Soaring Over the Smokies
Wild Eagle is a wing coaster, meaning you sit on either side of the track with nothing above or below you. It feels like flying, especially when you’re swooping over the trees with mountain views in every direction. It’s not the most intense coaster, but it’s incredibly fun and the views are unbeatable.
Mystery Mine – Weird and Wonderful
This one is surprising. It’s part dark ride, part coaster, set in a creepy abandoned mine with some genuinely unexpected moments. The 95-degree drop at the end (yes, past vertical) caught us completely off guard. If you like coasters with a story and some quirky theming, Mystery Mine is worth the wait.
Tennessee Tornado – A Classic
A solid steel looping coaster with a 128-foot drop. Nothing revolutionary, but smooth, fun, and a Dollywood classic. The line moves fast too.
Daredevil Falls – Get Ready to Get Wet
We needed a cool-down, and Daredevil Falls delivered. This log flume takes you through a lumber mill scene before a 60-foot plunge. We got soaked – like, properly soaked – but on a hot Tennessee day, it was perfect.
Warning: If you’re in the front row, you WILL get drenched. No exaggeration.
The Cinnamon Bread: Yes, It Lives Up to the Hype
Let’s talk about the real star of Dollywood: the cinnamon bread from the Grist Mill.
We’d read about it. We’d seen the photos. We thought, “It’s just bread, how good can it be?”
It’s that good.
Freshly baked, warm, absolutely coated in cinnamon sugar and butter. We bought one loaf, immediately regretted not buying two, and went back for another before we left. It’s sweet, it’s soft, and it’s probably the best $8 you’ll spend in any theme park.
Pro tip: Get it early. The line gets long by afternoon, and they can sell out on busy days.
The Shows: We Caught One!
We were mostly focused on coasters, but we did stop for the Gazillion Bubble Show – and honestly? It was great fun. Yes, it’s aimed at kids, but watching thousands of bubbles fill the theatre (and a performer climb inside a giant bubble) had us grinning the whole time. Sometimes you just have to embrace the silly stuff.
Dollywood is also famous for its bluegrass, country, and gospel performances. We didn’t catch any of those this trip, but if we go back, we’re making time for at least one.
Other Food Worth Trying
Beyond the legendary cinnamon bread:
Aunt Granny’s Restaurant – A Southern buffet with fried chicken, mac and cheese, and all the comfort food you can handle. We didn’t eat here, but the smell alone almost pulled us in.
Hickory House BBQ – Solid pulled pork and ribs if you need something hearty between coasters.
Spotlight Bakery – Home of the 25-pound apple pie. Yes, twenty-five pounds. They sell it by the slice.
Our Tips for Visiting Dollywood
After a full day at the park, here’s what we’d tell first-timers:
- Get there early. Dollywood gets busy, especially on weekends. Arriving at rope drop let us hit Lightning Rod and Wild Eagle with minimal wait.
- Grab the cinnamon bread first thing. Seriously. The Grist Mill is right near the entrance – stop there before you do anything else.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The park is built into the mountains, so there are hills everywhere. Your feet will thank you.
- Check ride availability. Lightning Rod is amazing but known for occasional downtime. If it’s running when you arrive, prioritize it.
- Don’t underestimate the heat. We visited in summer and it was HOT. Daredevil Falls and plenty of water breaks were essential.
- Consider a TimeSaver Pass. If it’s a busy day and you want to hit everything, the skip-the-line pass can be worth it.

A Note for Dolly Parton Fans
Real talk: Iain is a huge Dolly Parton fan, and that was part of why we wanted to visit. So we have to be honest here – if you’re going specifically to see Dolly exhibits, museums, or tributes, you might be a little disappointed.
Outside of the retail stores (which are packed with Dolly merch), there isn’t a huge Dolly presence throughout the park. There’s no Dolly museum or dedicated exhibit area. The park is more “inspired by” Dolly’s Smoky Mountain roots than it is a celebration of her career.
That said, it doesn’t take away from how great the park is. Just go in expecting a fantastic theme park with Southern charm – not a Dolly Parton experience.
Final Thoughts: We’d Absolutely Go Back
Dollywood surprised us in the best way. It’s not trying to be Disney or Universal – it’s doing its own thing, and doing it really well. The coasters are legit, the food is incredible, and the whole park has a warmth that’s hard to describe.
If you’re anywhere near Tennessee, make the trip. And when you do, save us a loaf of that cinnamon bread.
